Monika Flakowicz

I am an Adult Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist and also a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist with over 17 years of working for the NHS and private practice. I previously trained as, a Clinical Psychologist and obtained Masters in Psychology at Jagiellonian University in Cracow. My interest in human development led me to study Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy at the Tavistock Clinic in London, one of the leading training institutions in the UK. I completed this specialist and intensive 5 year training in 2008. Since then, I have been working in various NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health settings, including schools. I then continued to be fascinated by the human growth and I trained in Adult Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at the British Psychotherapy Foundation. I have been working in the NHS setting, the Cassel Hospital which specialises in treatment of personality disorders since 2012.My knowledge of psychological development throughout life time, from early childhood equips me to work at a greater depth with my adult patients and to better understand origins of their difficulties.  In addition to my NHS work I have a private practice set in North London where I see children, families and adults with various psychological and emotional difficulties. I hold professional registration with British Psychoanalytic Council and the Association of Child Psychotherapists. Currently due to COVID 19 I offer psychotherapy online.

When we suffer from anxiety and depression or are locked into all sorts of negative feelings and behaviours, we lose our ability to think. Everything becomes too overwhelming. Some of these feelings and behaviours can be difficult to think about, because they are unconscious, rooted in our past experiences and relationships. Unlocking these unconscious roots releases you from anxiety and many other negative feelings and patterns.

As a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist, I create a safe, confidential environment for my clients and aim to build a trusting relationship with you over time. I listen carefully and pay attention to what you bring to the sessions. I try to understand your difficulties without judgement and I hope to get into the root cause of the issues that make you suffer. Expressing yourself through words in an accepting and non-judgemental atmosphere, you are empowered to understand yourself better, be more accepting and in control of the difficulties within you. The exploration of your thoughts and feelings can lead to unravelling of the unconscious conflicts stemming from your early experiences. Such insight into root cause of your vulnerabilities can help you to free yourself from dysfunctional coping strategies that have been causing you difficulties. You can begin to approach things in a new way and become more creative and free in your life.

As therapy is a collaborative process, we will work together to make sense of confusing and troubling thoughts in order to better understand yourself. The insight can lead to lessening of anxieties and low mood as well as improved functioning in relationships with others. You will be able to work through painful issues and life experiences and learn different and more functional ways of coping.

Children and young people can be helped to express themselves freely through an age appropriate therapeutic techniques i.e. play, drama and drawing. Your child or the teenager will have a chance to explore what troubles them through play which reduces the negative behaviours, as difficult feelings can gradually be put into words and therefore don’t need to be acted out. I also offer consultation and short-term help to parents who are concerned about their children’s behaviour or emotional well-being. The consultations can help you as parents to understand your child better and to improve your relationship with the child. This can lead to change in your child’s behaviour and create a happier and more settled family life.

I specialise in a wide range of psychological and mental health problems across the age range. I am particularly skilled in difficulties including:
